Lauki-Chana Dal

Ingredients
1 Chana dal 1 cup
2 Lauki, peeled and cut into small pieces 100 grams
3 Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
4 Onion, finely chopped 1
5 Tomatoes, finely chopped 2
6 Cumin seeds 1/4 teaspoon
7 Asafetida [heeng] a pinch
8 Salt to taste
9 Coriander powder 1/2 teaspoon
10 Oil or ghee 1 tablespoon
11 Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped 1 tablespoon
Method
Wash chana dal well and soak in water for at least 20 minutes, drain and pour into the pressure cooker together with lauki, salt, coriander powder, turmeric powder and 4 cups of water, cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles. Turn off the flame and let it open. Heat oil or ghee in a pan over medium-high heat, add cumin seeds and heeng and let it splutter. Now add chopped onions and cook until lightly browned, add tomatoes, stir, cover and cook over low heat until tender. Pour this tadka over the dal, stir, garnish it with butter and chopped coriander and serve.
