Ingredients
1 Arhar dal 1 cup
2 Water 4 cups
3 Onion, finely chopped 1
4 Tomatoes, finely chopped 2
5 Ginger-garlic paste 1 teaspoon
6 Green chilies, finely chopped 2
7 Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
8 Coriander powder 1/2 teaspoon
9 Red chili powder 1 teaspoon
10 Cumin powder 1/4 teaspoon
11 Salt to taste
12 Cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon
13 Mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon
14 Ghee 1 tablespoon
15 Oil 2 tablespoons
16 Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped 2 tablespoons
17 Lemon juice 1 tablespoon
Method
Wash dal well and transfer to the pressure cooker together with salt, turmeric and 4 cups of water. Cover and cook for 3 whistles. Turn off the flame and let it open.
Heat oil in a pan or kadahi over medium-high heat, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds and let it splutter. Now add onions and green chilies and cook until light brown, add ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1 minute. Now add tomatoes, coriander powder, cumin powder and red chili powder, stir and cook until tender. Now pour the cooked dal into this pan, stir and cook for 1 more minute. Add chopped coriander and ghee, stir and serve.

This is a really simple, yet tasty recipe for dal, you can make dal ahead of time, and whenever you are ready to eat, make the tadka, pour required quantity of dal into tadka and serve.
