Ingredients
1 Chana dal 1 cup
2 Lauki [bottle gourd], peeled & chopped 2 cups
3 Onion, finely chopped 1
4 Garlic, finely chopped 4 cloves
5 Ginger, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon
6 Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
7 Red chili powder 1/2 teaspoon
8 Salt to taste
9 Clarified butter[ghee] or oil 2 tablespoons
10 Green coriander leaves, finely chopped 2 tablespoons
11 Whole dried red chilies 2
12 Cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon
13 Green chilies, finely chopped 3
14 Asafetida[heeng] a pinch
Method
Wash dal well, transfer into the pressure cooker with lauki, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt and 3 cups of water, cover and cook for 3-4 whistles. Let it open. Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat, add cumin seeds and red chilies and let it splutter, now add onions, ginger, garlic, green chilies and asafetida and cook until lightly browned. Pour this tadka over dal, add ghee and coriander, stir and serve.

Lauki is very light vegetable. So you can especially make this for older ones.
