Ingredients
1 Toor dal (arhar dal) 1 cup
2 Tomatoes, finely chopped 2
3 Green chilies, finely chopped 4-5
4 Onion, thinly sliced 1
5 Cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon
6 Ginger, peeled & finely chopped 1 teaspoon
7 Garlic, peeled & finely chopped 4-5 cloves
8 Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon
9 Red chili powder 1 teaspoon
10 Mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon
11 Whole coriander seeds 1/4 teaspoon
12 Fenugreek seeds (methi dana) 1/8 teaspoon
13 Salt to taste
14 Lemon juice 2 tablespoons
15 Oil or ghee (clarified butter) 2 tablespoons
16 Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped 2 tablespoons
Method
Wash dal well, transfer it to the pressure cooker with 4 cups of water, salt and turmeric powder and cook for 2-3 whistles. Turn off the heat and let it open. Heat oil or ghee in a pan, add cumin, mustard, fenugreek and coriander seeds and let it splutter, now add ginger-garlic and fry until light brown. Add onions and green chilies and cook for 2-3 minutes, now add tomatoes, red chili powder and cook until tomatoes becomes tender. Pour this tadka over dal, add chopped coriander and lemon juice, stir and serve.
